About books, writers and, of course, readers

Calling all would-be sleuths and young readers

July

New York State’s summer reading program is well underway, but there is still time to sign up and be a part of the annual push to foster literacy. Even though on very hot days kids would rather dive into a swimming pool than good book everyone needs some quiet time.

For kids, the reading program is called Get a Clue@Your Library. For teens, the theme is You Never Know@Your Library. The New York State Library has teamed up with 40 other states in a national collaborative summer library program. The idea is to provide a way for children and teens to keep up their reading skills during te summer months. And, as an added benefit they can learn that reading is fun and an important lifelong skill. Studies have shown that children who participate in summer reading programs arrive at school in the fall really ready to learn. The key to success, say librarians, is to find materials kids want to read and involve their families in the activity. Library staffers are available to help inspire and make suggestions on specific books. There are flashy posters and prizes to further catch everyone’s attention.

The 2007 New York State summer reading program is funded with federal Library Services and Technology Act funds, awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services. Each community library in LoHud’s tri-county region has formulated its own program with games, events and activities.

The official site for the reading program is at www.summerreadingnys.org

About the author
Barbara NackmanA municipal reporter for The Journal News since 1997, Barbara Livingston Nackman has covered local governments, events and breaking news from many communities. She began her journalism career by writing for bookselling and library publications. As a suburban mother, she made sure her two sons, now 23 and 21, had bookshelves and reading chairs in their rooms and library cards way before they had driver's licenses. Her editors have now found an outlet for all those book-related stories she pitches and her husband hopes she gains an interest in reading historical non-fiction.

Well, maybe if it's about Benjamin Franklin and the Free Library of Philadelphia. READ MORE
