New mom travels in books

My colleague staff writer Marcela Rojas shares some neat comments about a book she read while in the home stretch of her pregnancy. As a side note, when I was pregnant, more than 21 years ago mind you, I had cravings for cranberries and read books about childcare and the tenth month. It’s a different world these days—and I give Marcela big cheers for delving into a good book as her life was about to totally change.
Here’s what Marcela says:
I was nine months pregnant when I read “Eat, Pray, Loveâ€? by Elizabeth Gilbert. I hadn’t even had my baby and the book made me long for those carefree days of adventure and travel as the author took us with her so eloquently-and hilariously-across Italy, India and Indonesia. Gilbert, who was reportedly living in Garrison when she went through a nasty divorce (great line in the book goes something like: If you really want to get to know a person, divorce them) decided to go on a year-long quest that would be filled with gelato, meditation and the rediscovery of love. Four months and one happy baby later, I’m still thinking about that book for its ability to take me on a trip when I couldn’t take one-and probably won’t for quite some time. I hear the book has been optioned for a movie starring Julia Roberts.
I’m onto the “Interpreter of Maladies,â€? a collection of short stories by Pulitzer Prize winning author Jhumpa Lahiri. She’s an equally talented writer who is really making me crave Indian food or better yet, Indian food in India.
Any thoughts on these two books and/or authors? And any suggestions for my next read?
