There are indeed teens who are thick into reading even though the school year has just begun.
The 2008 Mid-Hudson Library System Battle of the Books Regional Competition will take place form 1 to 4 p.m. Sat., Sept. 13 from at the Roy C. Ketchum High School in Wappingers Falls, reports Carol Donick, president of the Putnam County librarians group and library director at Desmond-Fish in Garrison.
This will be the fourth annual Battle of the Books, which puts teams from 15 area libraries, including Cold Spring, in competition with each other.ÂÂ Last year, Cold Spring students from the Butterfield library were the grand winners.ÂÂ Librarians wrote over 700 trivia questions based on the 10 titles chosen for young people to read.
Throughout the summer, each library recruited 6th to 9th graders to read the books and take part in activities designed to be fun and help them masterÂÂ details of each story.ÂÂ Teams will be competing for a great book-shaped crystal trophy as well as a banner identifying their library as this year’s winner.ÂÂ These young people are exposed to great teen literature, develop good teamwork skills, display sportsmanship, and generally enjoy a positive experience based on reading,ÂÂ reports Donic.
The librarian adds that the public is welcome to attend this weekend’s competition “to see some really bright kids have great fun battling over teen lit.”
