About books, writers and, of course, readers

Barbara Nackman

Barbara NackmanA municipal reporter for The Journal News since 1997, Barbara Livingston Nackman has covered local governments, events and breaking news from many communities. She began her journalism career by writing for bookselling and library publications. As a suburban mother, she made sure her two sons, now 23 and 21, had bookshelves and reading chairs in their rooms‚ and library cards way before they had driver's licenses. Her editors have now found an outlet for all those book-related stories she pitches and her husband hopes she gains an interest in reading historical non-fiction. Well, maybe IF it's about Benjamin Franklin and the Free Library of Philadelphia.

Summer reading done?

August
27

That’s the question many parents will be asking their children this weekend.

And the answer better be ‘yes.’ Students have had months to pour over books from lists that were handed out when school ended in June — that seems a long time ago.

Librarians have reported that there has been a sudden increase of interest [...]

Ban “Mein Kampf”?

August
26

I generally view the discussion of what books should or should not be banned in a very black-and-white way. I usually come down quite hard on not banning books. In fact, those titles usually on a list of commonly banned books often seem quite bland in terms of being offensive, such as Mark Twain’s [...]

On bookmarks and reading music

August
20

Bookmarks are great inventions, both clever and useful. They are small treasures that hold your place in a book, and if carefully chosen, also remind you of something else in a very pleasant way. I never like to use a scrap of paper to hold my place and find these often fall out.

You never [...]

This is clearly the season to catch a good, fun book and pass along some suggestions. So here is a fiction title I saw mentioned in a recent e-mail from the White Plains Public Library. It is about a woman in her 60s (gasp) who takes a chance and finds new happiness in her [...]

What’s a book blog to do?

August
15

The role of a book blog is a curious one and now I know I am not the only one who has given this some thought.

A recent entry on Huffingtonpost.com by Lissa Warren announces that book blogs won’t save books or even replace the ever shrinking book sections of newspapers and magazines with [...]

The American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, based in Tarrytown, and the American Library Association, based in Chicago, have announced a new Web site to help bookstores and libraries promote the annual Banned Books Week, which this year is from Sept. 27 through Oct. 4.

As the above graphic shows, some new additions to [...]

Stand-up comedian Nick Di Paolo was heard touting a book by Westchester-ite Robert Klein, a fellow comedian with a long-standing reputation for jokes about his Bronx  background and his adult life in the suburbs.

The book he recommended — without even being asked for a suggestion — was Klein’s well-received memoir-style tome, “The Amorous [...]
