cheap and delicious foodie spots in Auckland

have not forgotten their humble beginnings; keeping their refreshing menu of pho, salads, fresh and fried spring rolls and lemongrass dishes. Photo / Babiche MartensEating at restaurants is so old fashioned. With way more bang for your buck, it’s all about food trucks or at least mobile food, even if it’s not on wheels right now. Fast, cheap and delicious, you can now experience street food at a number of locations around Auckland. While we’re not yet LA, New York or Portland there is definitely a growing mobile food scene here. People are flocking to the night markets at Pakuranga, Glenfield and the new Silo Sessions to lap up Dutch poffertjes, Korean pancakes, Hungarian pastries, Japanese takoyaki and a wealth of other delights from all corners of the globe.Of course some countries have been doing this for years. The hawker stalls of Singapore and Penang are world renowned and in the last five years the food truck scene in the States has exploded. There you can find "pods" everywhere with seven or eight trucks in the same location every week.Social media plays a big part in the mobile food business here. Many operators don’t even bother having a website as the information/venues are always changing. Make sure you "like" all your favourite food on the go on their Facebook pages so you know where to find them when that taco/pizza/sausage/churro craving hits! Here are some of our favourites for food on the go in Auckland:This is the original version of what is now Restaurant in Beach Rd. They only had the caravan until 2009 when they found a permanent home in the CBD. But they haven’t forgotten their humble beginnings and you can still find their pho, salads, fresh and fried spring rolls, curries and lemongrass dishes at Takapuna. Ma Le is the mama in charge of the menu and her food is good. In December 2007 he started this mobile business as he saw the need for quality fresh food at events. He now has two mobile wood oven tandem trailer units and a customised wood oven container kitchen and can pump out 175 pizzas an hour with two ovens blazing. Try his classic margherita or Italian sausage toppings.Locations: Various events next are Classic Hits Winery Tour at Villa Maria Estate; Splore; Devonport Food and Wine Festival and WOMAD.Ph: 021 201 9206Torro ChurroWhen Sretko Nenadic was made redundant from his job at Fisher and Paykel, he took a trip to Melbourne. After seeing a churro stall with long queues he wondered whether it would be something he could replicate. Being an engineer he made his own machine and two years later has three units, is at six weekly venues and has queues longer than that stall in Melbourne. Churros come in regular, drizzled in chocolate and caramel and a jumbo size with a gooey caramel centre.Locations: Pakuranga and Glenfield Night markets; Silo on Friday nights; Otara markets; Takapuna Markets; AUT CampusPh: 021 060 1735Sam Sargent has followed the food truck revolution in the States very carefully and even worked with Koji BBQ of LA when designing his business. The gourmet sandwiches and salads fly out the window with a regular crowd of city workers. Part of the appeal is the very cool silver truck, loud music, tables and fake grass outside. It just looks like a cool place to be. Try the Angus Pure beef sandwiches. Heaven for carnivores.Location: Corner of Tyler and Commerce St, BritomartPh: 09 300 3089The quality of food in some trucks is beyond what you may expect. Frenchman Nico Fini has worked in Michelin starred restaurants and was head chef at a restaurant voted in the top 20 by Gault Millau. He has had his food cart for 14 years and has recently relocated from Christchurch where he has been known to sell more than 2000 snails and 700 lamb shanks on a good day at a festival. He has adapted his food to New Zealand palates but always retains the Frenchy flourishes like the spicy lamb sausage in the mega dog and the burger made with a venison patty. For those looking for the real French deal you can’t go past his escargot and lamb shanks.Locations: Various events next are Devonport Wine and Food Festival and Waikato Wine and Food FestivalPh: 027 642 0315Siri Taste of Sri LankaSri Lankan food is nowhere near as big as Thai, Japanese or Indian here but Nandasiri Alwis has been doing his best to educate us on his country’s cuisine. It’s working, as he’s gone from his one mobile unit to an outlet in Mt Roskill and now a restaurant in Sandringham too. His chicken appa kottu is amazing. It’s a wafer thin bowl made from rice and coconut milk batter filled with spicy chicken curry. He also serves curry rolls, curry puffs and chicken roti wraps.

Syria: Battle for Daria rages as Syrian Army pushes forward1:25

Syrian Army troops were seen fighting against militants in Daria, Saturday, as government forces continued to push forward against the Islamic State and other militant groups near Damascus. The Syrian Army reported retaking more than 40 blocks from militants in Daria in the latest assault. According to General Ali Abdullah Ayyoub, the head of the Syrian General Staff, the Syrian Army’s advance has been made possible due to Russian Air Force jets managing to destroy various important targets controlled by militant groups in the area. Russia began conducting airstrikes against IS positions in Syria on September 30. Earlier on Saturday, Russian Defense Ministry spokesperson Major General Igor Konashenkov confirmed that the Russian Air Force had stepped up its air campaign against ISIS. According to French government sources, Cairo will pay around $1 billion (?950 million) for the vessels, using financing from Saudi Arabia. The French Defense Ministry announced last month that the Mistrals would be delivered to Egypt around March 2016. The contract also provides four months of training in France for around 400 Egyptian sailors. Russia ordered the construction of the two ‘Mistral’ class helicopter carriers from France back in 2011. The ships were meant to be delivered in 2014, but the process was delayed as a result of the European Union imposed sanctions against Russia. Moscow was paid ?950 million ($1 billion) by Paris in compensation money. Footage courtesy of Egypt State TelevisionCam Inman: Jarryd Hayne handled release ‘really well’1:17

Violent clashes continued in Bethlehem as Palestinian protesters battled with Israeli security forces, on Saturday. Dozens of Palestinians were injured during the clashes, among many erupting across the Occupied Palestinian Territories as protests have escalated in the West Bank and Gaza due to rising political tensions over the Al Aqsa mosque, as well as the continued construction of illegal Israeli settlements. At least 42 Palestinians and seven Israelis have died in the latest round of violence.

What should I buy my employees

I own a small business (around 15 people in the office at any given time). Some days, I’m feeling grumpy, most days, I’m feeling normal, and some days, I’m feeling generous.

Where we are as a company, I can’t raise people’s salaries when I’m feeling generous. I would, though, like to be able to bring in some gift of appreciation on occasion. When certain sales goals are met, the whole office gets lunch, and I’d like to keep the lunch reward tied to sales goals.

I assume a number of you work in some sort of office yourself. I want to limit this in time (no seven page individualized essays on why each person is a shining example of humanity) and money (this will likely come out of my pocket, and I’m not, by any means, wealthy).

Under $10 a person would make sense. I’m in a large metropolitan area, so I have access to a number of different types of shops.

What food/trinkets/stuff could someone at work get you that would brighten your day/make you feel happy without distracting you too much (squirt guns are probably out)?

Why not give them each a free pass for a half day off. They can leave early, come in late, whatever. I’d like that more than a bagel or a mousepad.

Cinema gift cards are always appreciated.

Company T shirts? I don’t get the attraction myself but people at my work go crazy over free shirts.

You could also do movie ticket vouchers or some similar event (cheap minor league sports tickets?).

A 3 hour lunch would be nice. Coffee. I’d stay away from trinket ey sorts of things like, I don’t know, fun erasers or something. We work in a time sensitive business, and while we’re doing well right now, we’re not doing that well. Plus, at least for our sales time, time off just means less time to close deals. We have a half day Friday incentive that, when earned, is usually mostly ignored by the staff, because commission is worth more than their hourly wage.

posted by duckierose at 10:12 AM on February 18, 2010

Cinema gift cards are certainly not always appreciated. Maybe by you. In general gift cards are a bad choice, because it forces people to go somewhere to redeem it that they might not want to go.

Nice coffee and tea for the office is good, or a better coffee maker. It’s something the entire office can enjoy, normally. I think token gifts in lieu of raises or bonsues is pretty tacky, and I don’t really appreciate it much. Call me ungrateful, but I do my job well because I take pride in my work, and don’t want to feel "bribed" by my employer to continue doing a good job. not having to use vacation time, are without doubt the best gift I’ve ever received from my boss.

posted by halogen at 10:15 AM on February 18, 2010

I’m liking the suggestions, but please remember, this is going to be out of my own pocket. I am not the sole owner of the company, and while I wish I could shower ever staff member with raises and vacation time, it’s not economically feasible at this time. I don’t wish to give out a $5 coffee mug in lieu of a raise. I was just hoping for fun ideas to make people smile for a bit on a slow Friday afternoon, coming from a person, not The Company.

Extra time off, gift cards or a free lunch are a good bet.

posted by cwarmy at 10:23 AM on February 18, 2010

I think shownomercy has a good suggestion. At our office people regularly supply good tea and coffee (having both caf and decaf available), and we have a decent coffee maker, microwave, and a hot water pot/kettle. You as boss bumping up the offerings in that line to better quality sometimes would be very much appreciated around my office.

How to Make a Collared Shirt Look Cute

Layer the collared shirt with a cardigan or pullover sweater. Men and women alike can wear these. Once the sweater is on, pull the collar up and then fold it down over the neck of the sweater so that it can be easily seen. Smooth out the collared shirt underneath the sweater by pulling down on the bottom of the shirt to remove any wrinkles.

Undo one or two of the shirt’s top buttons. To avoid looking formal or "corporate," leave two undone. Don’t undo more than a couple of buttons, though. Avoid showing off too much chest hair or decolletage.

Wear a tank top or graphic tee underneath the collared shirt. Leave the collared shirt unbuttoned all the way to show off a cotton shirt. For women, a light camisole or tank top will give your outfit a summer glow. For men, wear a lightweight graphic tee.

Wear the collared shirt with a pair of casual, dark wash jeans. A collared shirt with a short, tailored bottom meant to remain untucked will look the best with this stylish choice. Women can add a skinny belt over the collared shirt around the smallest part of the waist to emphasize their figure.

Add accessories, such as necklaces, bracelets or a watch to create an elegant, semi formal look. Women can add emphasis to a collared shirt by wearing bright, jewel tone, chunky bracelets and necklaces. Men can add a nice watch to dress up a collared shirt.

California lawmaker calls for better protection of student athletes

April 5, 2013 By Patrick McGreevy

The gruesome leg injury to University of Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware has one California lawmaker calling for better financial protections for student athletes nationwide. In a letter to the National Collegiate Athletic Assn., state Sen. Alex Padilla (D Pacoima) said the group should at least adopt standards in a new California law. The measure, which took effect Jan. 1, requires universities that make a certain amount of money from television deals to provide the equivalent of academic scholarships to athletes whose injuries result in them losing their athletic scholarships.

ARTICLES BY DATELoyola Marymount student athletes are making the grade

April 26, 2014 By James Barragan

The NCAA and its member institutions often refer to "student athletes," but the front side of the term isn’t often highlighted in a sports section. We asked officials from the Southland’s Division I universities to point us toward their best and brightest the teams that made classroom performance a priority. Here is what we found at Loyola Marymount: The Seaver School of Science and Engineering at Loyola Marymount is not for the faint of academic heart. But it’s where a fair share of Loyola Marymount athletes 27 of 395 to be exact focus their studies.

One city weighs action on student athletes with possible concussions

January 13, 2011 By Mary Forgione, Tribune Health

Concussions among student athletes are on the rise, as are concerns that repeated injuries could have serious long term effects. But less clear are the steps schools and communities should take in protecting children who play sports from such injuries. Chicago, for example, is weighing a new rule. Executive Director DeMaurice Smith has spoken out in support of the ruling allowing Northwestern football players to unionize, saying it has nothing to do with college athletes looking for a paycheck. "In the more than 100 years since the NCAA was founded, it has not allowed athletes to have a seat at the table to discuss serious issues and therefore has done little to address full medical coverage for injuries sustained, limitations on practice time, scholarship shortfalls and rules to make promised education a reality," Smith wrote in an op ed piece published Tuesday night by The Huffington Post.

If student athletes are employees, give them a seat at the negotiating table

March 27, 2014 By Matthew Fleischer, guest blogger

Yet another nail went into the coffin of the NCAA on Wednesday. And for those who genuinely care about the well being of college athletes, that couldn’t be better news. Peter Sung Ohr, a regional National Labor Relations Board official, ruled that scholarship football players at Northwestern University aren’t student athletes, as the NCAA likes to designate them, but rather employees of the school who generate vast sums of money for the institution. We asked officials from the Southland’s Division I universities to point us toward their best and brightest the teams that made classroom performance a priority. Here is what we found at Loyola Marymount: The Seaver School of Science and Engineering at Loyola Marymount is not for the faint of academic heart. 31). Athletes are offered free rides to institutions they admit they otherwise could not have attended based on their grades, and then they complain about the requirements. When they get a real job, do they think their employer will change the rules to accommodate them? The answer is no. If you don’t like the stipulations of this gift, then don’t take it or shut up. Early Career

Evel Knievel: Early Career

Knievel launched himself into the public eye one New Year’s Eve, 1967, with a jump over the fountains at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Unfortunately for Knievel, he also launched himself into a lot of other things on that day, too.

While Knievel cleared the 151 feet (46 meters) of fountains at Caesars Palace, he failed to stick the landing, vaulted over the handlebars of his motorcycle and slid 165 feet (50.3 meters) on concrete before finally coming to a rest. The jump left him with a broken skull, pelvis and ribs. He spent nearly 30 days in a coma and millions of people watched the accident on television.

The fact that the jump wasn’t technically successful didn’t seem to matter to Knievel. The jump (and the crash) had won him legions of fans as well as regular appearances on ABC’s Wide World of Sports. Between 1973 and 1976, Knievel appeared on the Wide World of Sports seven times, jumping everything from wrecked cars to double decker buses. His jumps were some of the highest rated episodes in the program’s history.

In 1974, Knievel was paid $6 million dollars to jump the Snake River Canyon in Idaho. For the jump, which required him to clear 1,600 feet (487.7 meters), he used a specially made rocket propelled motorcycle, dubbed the "Skycycle." While the launch portion of the jump went well, the parachute on the jet bike deployed too early, causing the entire rig to float down into the canyon.

Knievel’s next stunt was also unsuccessful, and one of the most famous of his career. In London’s Wembley Stadium, Knievel was slated to jump 13 buses in front of 70,000 fans. On his Harley Davidson, he hit the ramp at 90 miles per hour (144.8 kilometers per hour), and barely cleared the 13th bus. But once again, the landing wasn’t so smooth. But what shocked his fans the most wasn’t the spectacular jump or even the grisly crash it was what Knievel said only moments after the impact.

Access Your IRA or Other Retirement Account

You can withdraw money from a 401(k) after the account holder reaches 59 1/2 years of age. The mandatory age where you must take monthly minimum withdrawals is 70 1/2 unless you are still working. If you stop working after 70 1/2 then you must start taking withdrawals immediately the following month.

Early Access

You may be allowed to access tax deferred retirement accounts early if there is a case of "hardship". This includes situations such as medical expenses, college tuition, covering a mortgage payment to avoid foreclosure or recovering from a natural disaster. You will be paying taxes on the amount withdrawn plus ten percent for an extra tax early withdrawal fee (which means you take out money to cover the taxes). The year after you take out the money the contribution limit is reduced by the size of the withdrawal. An example of this would be that you are allowed a $9,000 limit for the year instead of a $15,000 limit.

You may also be able to take up to half of the account value in the form of a loan with an interest rate of up to two percent over prime. You then repay the loan, usually within five years, but it comes out of post tax dollars so the repayments do not get the same tax savings as the original contribution to the account would have received.

Limitations, Transfers and Taxes

You can transfer both SIMPLE IRA accounts and 401(k) accounts to another employer tax free if you do it within two years of opening the account. You can also transfer an IRA to an Educational IRA to help a child education. Neither transfers or rollovers are taxable. Educational IRA withdrawals are not taxable; but make sure it is going for an educational purpose or you risk getting huge penalties. If you inherit an IRA you are allowed a five year time frame to disperse the money. If you take funds out of the retirement account for hardship purposes as stated above, you must replace an equal amount of money before filing taxes for that year to avoid paying taxes and penalties.

CentriLogic Acquires US Virgin Islands Hosting Provider

Hosting and colocation provider CentriLogic is continuing an aggressive acquisition strategy with the purchase of Adveniat Corporation, a data center and hosting provider based in the US Virgin Islands, a territory in the Caribbean Sea often used as a tax haven.

Adveniat represents CentriLogic’s third acquisition in the past 18 months, and brings CentriLogic’s total data center holdings to nine. These facilities are spread across seven markets throughout Canada, the US, the UK, Hong Kong, and, now, the USVI.

The USVI has certain income tax liability rules that often result in much lower taxes, which makes it an appealing business location for e commerce companies such as client JetPay.

The USVI is also a critical telecommunications hub with undersea cable connections that pass data between South America, Central America, and the Caribbean to North America and Europe. According to data from TeleGeography, a number of undersea cables pass through USVI, including the Global Caribbean Network (GCN), the Mid Atlantic Crossing (MAC), the Pan American (PAN AM), the Perseid, and the South American Crossing (SAC).

While hosting infrastructure in nearby Puerto Rico might be an option in some instances, Adveniat stands out as a dominant hosting provider in USVI with its Tier 1 facility with N+2 redundancy and access to the world’s largest single concentration of unused internet bandwidth.

With the acquisition of Adveniat, CentriLogic will also be better positioned to serve customers throughout the Caribbean and Southern Hemisphere, and give customers direct interconnectivity between USVI and existing CentriLogic facilities.

The Adveniat facility will continue to be the exclusive provider of managed hosting services to the University of the Virgin Islands Research and Technology Park (known as which is a major contract.

"By acquiring Adveniat we have established CentriLogic as the RTPark’s premier independent gateway and hosting provider, and we are now the first carrier neutral managed hosting provider in the USVI," CentriLogic president and CEO Robert Offley said in a statement.

"With a state of the art data center and fiber connectivity in the USVI, we can now directly support customers who are looking for both reliable managed hosting solutions and significant income tax savings."

About this blog
Four longtime Journal News reporters share their insights about fiction, non-fiction, poetry and short stories by bringing books discussions online and exploring the local literati scene. Lots of people say they are booklovers, but Elizabeth Ganga, Barbara Livingston Nackman, Ken Valenti and Randi Weiner really are!

What they blog about
Book Notes: An ongoing chat about events, authors and news items about books, libraries, authors and everything literary from metro news reporters Barbara Livingston Nackman and Elizabeth Ganga. Barbara has been a reporter for The Journal News since 1997. She covers municipalities in Putnam County and keeps track of book events everywhere - and began her career writing about books and libraries. Lisa has been a reporter for The Journal News since 2000, after working at several newspapers in Connecticut. She has covered cities and town in sourthern and northern Westchester and is a big Jane Austen fan (though she reads everything from history to mysteries). Both reporters work out of the Mount Kisco bureau and frequently trade tidbits about books and events.

Novel Pursuits: Ken Valenti sheds light on his ongoing experiences as a novelist and poet.  He talks about his trials and tribulations including musings about projects, readings, successes, and even insights into what he is reading and finds interesting. A reporter for The Journal News and its forerunners for more than 20 years, Ken now covers transportation. His first love has been writing fiction, but he's only begun pursuing that dream in recent years. He has been a reader and fiction editor for the journal Inkwell, and has published one short story in another fiction journal.

Seasoned Works: Randi Weiner dishes up an ongoing discussion about all books - old and savory. Though Randi keeps readers abreast of school issues most days and reads lots of children's and young adult books, current science fiction and murder mysteries, her overriding passion is older works generally written before 1940. She chats online about favorites and newly discovered treasures as well as book exhibits and talks related to the dusty, the musty and the marvelous illustrators of the past. She has been a reporter since 1976, with Gannett since 1989. And for the record, she says she has a personal library of more than 4,000 volumes.
