Jeremy Corbyn’s dress sense

For many Italians it’s not Jeremy Corbyn’s supposedly Marxist lite economic policies, his commitment to unilateral nuclear disarmament or even his republicanism that has caught their attention.

South of the Alps, in the Bel paese, the real question mark hovering over the Labour leader is his dress sense or lack thereof.

Like Michael Foot, his predecessor of 35 years ago, the Labour leader’s scant regard for fashion, or even the traditional Westminster dress norms, has raised some eyebrows in Britain.

It displayed 13 photos of what it considered were Mr Corbyn’s biggest style faux pas, including his outing in shorts with trainers and long black socks. Neither was it impressed with his jackets or panama hats.

It said or perhaps hoped that Mr Corbyn’s aides were currently organising a style overhaul.

But while Mr Corbyn may trail in the style stakes, Italian political pundits have noted that the veteran leftist is known for his diligence, honesty and good manners three traits not apparent in a great many Italian parliamentarians, who are the highest paid in Europe.

This week two right wing senators were suspended for five days after making obscene and sexist gestures at a female senator during a debate on constitutional reform. One of the pair, Vincenzo D’Anna, appeared in front of TV cameras on 7 October, in an expensive suit, looking plump and declaring he would go on an unlikely hunger strike, in protest at his suspension.

What should I buy my employees

I own a small business (around 15 people in the office at any given time). Some days, I’m feeling grumpy, most days, I’m feeling normal, and some days, I’m feeling generous.

Where we are as a company, I can’t raise people’s salaries when I’m feeling generous. I would, though, like to be able to bring in some gift of appreciation on occasion. When certain sales goals are met, the whole office gets lunch, and I’d like to keep the lunch reward tied to sales goals.

I assume a number of you work in some sort of office yourself. I want to limit this in time (no seven page individualized essays on why each person is a shining example of humanity) and money (this will likely come out of my pocket, and I’m not, by any means, wealthy).

Under $10 a person would make sense. I’m in a large metropolitan area, so I have access to a number of different types of shops.

What food/trinkets/stuff could someone at work get you that would brighten your day/make you feel happy without distracting you too much (squirt guns are probably out)?

Why not give them each a free pass for a half day off. They can leave early, come in late, whatever. I’d like that more than a bagel or a mousepad.

Cinema gift cards are always appreciated.

Company T shirts? I don’t get the attraction myself but people at my work go crazy over free shirts.

You could also do movie ticket vouchers or some similar event (cheap minor league sports tickets?).

A 3 hour lunch would be nice. Coffee. I’d stay away from trinket ey sorts of things like, I don’t know, fun erasers or something. We work in a time sensitive business, and while we’re doing well right now, we’re not doing that well. Plus, at least for our sales time, time off just means less time to close deals. We have a half day Friday incentive that, when earned, is usually mostly ignored by the staff, because commission is worth more than their hourly wage.

posted by duckierose at 10:12 AM on February 18, 2010

Cinema gift cards are certainly not always appreciated. Maybe by you. In general gift cards are a bad choice, because it forces people to go somewhere to redeem it that they might not want to go.

Nice coffee and tea for the office is good, or a better coffee maker. It’s something the entire office can enjoy, normally. I think token gifts in lieu of raises or bonsues is pretty tacky, and I don’t really appreciate it much. Call me ungrateful, but I do my job well because I take pride in my work, and don’t want to feel "bribed" by my employer to continue doing a good job. not having to use vacation time, are without doubt the best gift I’ve ever received from my boss.

posted by halogen at 10:15 AM on February 18, 2010

I’m liking the suggestions, but please remember, this is going to be out of my own pocket. I am not the sole owner of the company, and while I wish I could shower ever staff member with raises and vacation time, it’s not economically feasible at this time. I don’t wish to give out a $5 coffee mug in lieu of a raise. I was just hoping for fun ideas to make people smile for a bit on a slow Friday afternoon, coming from a person, not The Company.

posted by duckierose at 10:20 AM on February 18, 2010

Extra time off, gift cards or a free lunch are a good bet.

posted by cwarmy at 10:23 AM on February 18, 2010

I think shownomercy has a good suggestion. At our office people regularly supply good tea and coffee (having both caf and decaf available), and we have a decent coffee maker, microwave, and a hot water pot/kettle. You as boss bumping up the offerings in that line to better quality sometimes would be very much appreciated around my office.

Part 1 of 15 How to Play forward in youth basketball.

The Oklahoma Roll is a great wrestling move that can be used when an opponent has been beating up pretty badly, and he in pain struggling to get up. It very opportunistic but also simple and is used to pin your opponent into submission. You do this by coming off the ropes and doing a forward roll over your opponent. You want your head to stay close to their body so that your head is coming across to the other side of his stomach while you rolling over. While doing this you need to take your right arm and put it over his left shoulder grabbing his left arm. Your left arm is going to.

This is a video tutorial in the Sports category where you are going to learn how to play offense in a game of soccer. The forward soccer position usually stays on the offensive side in order to score goals. Adrian Heath, head coach, shows you how to play the forward position properly. This is going to be a very easy and simple drill. All you are looking for is a nice little floating pass over the defender head to your own player in the forward position. And the forward player then tries to score the goal past the goalkeeper.

In this video, we learn how to adjust your head seat. You want to make sure the top of your stem is adjusted correctly and the spacers are adjusted correctly. Go in and tighten the top cap pole until it just snug. Then, when you grab your bike and roll it forward, go in and tighten it some more. If it too tight, it going to bind up and you won be able to turn your handle bars. Loosen them up as much as you can without them being too loose. From here, you will be able to ride your bike and enjoy!.

Sometimes you will have to pitch underhand whether you are playing softball, baseball or with little kids sometimes a lighter throw is necessary. It may seem odd and unnatural to pitch this way at first, but check out this tutorial for tips on how to toss that ball over the plate with the same force as upperhand pitching.

You Will Need:

A softball

A glove

A softball field

A catcher

A batter (optional)

Hold the ball in the glove at your waist, body relaxed, facing home plate 46 feet away. Touch the rubber slab on the pitcher’s mound with your dominant.

What to order at the most popular eateries in Hong Kong

They operate round the clock, serving distinctly indigenous comfort food with no nonsense service and an atmosphere of bustling industriousness.Cha chaan teng culture came of age in the 1950s when Hong Kong’s increasingly cosmopolitan and westernized middle classes began to broaden their palates. The result is a melange of tastes that fuses the cuisines of the various transient populations of Hong Kong into a new pastiche cuisine:accidental fusion food. Written on paper and taped to the walls, they extend wall to wall like a madman’s scrawl. In addition to the language barrier that exists for non Cantonese speakers, this is all enough to make neophytes shy away. Here’s a short guide that highlights several surefire cha chaan teng dishes.Tai Fat’s golden milk tea is the perfect pick me up.Delicious to a teaCha chaan teng literally means "tea restaurant" the drink has an important role at these establishments.A light, weak tea is served to all customers as soon as they sit down. Some choose to use this to clean their utensils, but really it’s for drinking. The good stuff is the Hong Kong style milk tea. This iconic drink made from a mixture of strong black teas with a lot of creamy milk should be an ocher colored, velvet smooth, mellow yet fragrant concoction.A milk tea done right will distinguish a cha chaan teng from the crowd and garner legions of loyal customers.Try one, hot or cold, sweetened or sugar free, at Tai Fat Restaurant. Since then, cha chaan tengs have served up instant noodles in endless variations. Our favorite way of eating instant noodles at a cha chaan teng is to order them with stir fried meat. Hong Kong’s finest representative of this is the scallion and chicken cutlet version at Lan Fong Yuen, a landmark cha chaan teng located in the shadow of the Mid Levels escalator. The noodles, sticky and chewy, are drizzled with soy sauce and topped with chicken with a strong ginger and scallion sauce.Yes, these are the same instant noodles that you’ve likely made at home, but so much better.Stir fried instant noodles with scallion oil and sliced chicken cutlet HK$42 includes coffee or tea at Lan Fong Yuen 2 Gage St., Central; +852 2544 3895"Oil and sand" toast at Cheung Kee or what we like to call "The Iraq."Propose a toastFrench toast is neither French nor toast per se, so the fact that the Hong Kong version forges new culinary ground is not necessarily blasphemous.Hong Kong style French toast is, however, a potential coronary on a plate. A common version amounts to what is essentially a syrup slathered, deep fried peanut butter sandwich.Si Yik, a small, no frills eatery adjoining Stanley Market, seems far from the tourist hordes that proliferate nearby. More of a dai pai dong (outdoor food stall) than a cha chaan teng per se, it happens to serve the best version of Hong Kong style French toast in all of Hong Kong.

Ralph Lauren admits bribery at Argentina subsidiary

Between 2004 and 2009, Ralph Lauren’s Argentinian subsidiary bribed customs officials "to improperly obtain paperwork necessary for goods to clear customs; permit clearance of items without the necessary paperwork and/or the clearance of prohibited items; and on occasion, to avoid inspection entirely," the Justice Department said. Fake invoices were created to mask the payoffs, which totaled roughly $580,000, according to case documents.

The SEC and Justice Department both praised the company’s response to the misconduct.

"The [non prosecution agreement] in this matter makes clear that we will confer substantial and tangible benefits on companies that respond appropriately to violations and cooperate fully with the SEC," the agency’s acting enforcement director, George Canellos, said in a statement.

Are There Health Benefits

We take vitamins and minerals to safeguard our health. Should we also add some bacteria?

What are probiotics? The term refers to bacteria that inhabit our intestines such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Every day, billions of these friendly intestinal bacteria are working hard to keep us healthy by performing numerous functions critical to our good health. These functions include aiding digestion, detoxifying the colon, supporting regular bowel movements, supporting immune functions, and fighting infection by food borne or other disease causing germs.

Many people are eating yogurt to increase their intake of probiotics, but most commercially available yogurt is not a very reliable source of quality, potent probiotic bacteria. A reliable source of probiotics should provide specified amounts of organisms (in the billions) that are processed with the best intention to preserving organisms capability, and should have research to support the beneficial role of specific organisms in human health.

The word bacteria have a reputation for causing disease, so just the idea of eating bacteria by the billions a day for your health is a hard pill to swallow. But the growing body of scientific evidence suggests that you can treat and even prevent some illness with foods and supplements containing certain kinds of live bacteria.

For example, Northern Europeans consume a lot of these beneficial microorganisms, called probiotics (from pro and biota, meaning Life because of their tradition of eating foods fermented with bacteria, such as yogurt.

Also, Probiotic laced drinks are big business in Japan as well as Europe. Such foods are not as popular in the United States, but interest in probiotics supplements is on the rise. Some digestive specialists are recommending them for disorders that frustrate conventional medicine, such as irritable bowel syndrome.

Products marketed as have benefits come with them that are at times exaggerated, such as miracle cures for acne to preventing cancer and heart disease. However, it does not mean probiotic therapy is without merit. Since the mid 1990s, clinical studies have established that it can help treat several gastrointestinal ills, delay the development of allergies in children, and treat and prevent vaginal and urinary tract infection in women.

There is an estimated 100 trillion microorganisms representing more than 500 different species inhabit every normal, healthy bowel. These microorganisms (or microflora) generally don make us sick; most are helpful. Gut dwelling bacteria keep pathogens (harmful microorganisms) in check, aid digestion and nutrient absorption, and contribute to immune function.

When microorganisms become depleted, usually it is the result of disease, stress, poor diet, or certain medications, and health problems can result. In this scenario, pathogens may get a foothold causing diarrhea and sometimes colitis (inflammation of the intestinal lining). The gut wall become letting through proteins that set off an inflammatory response. That is the reason it makes sense to replenish the bacteria supply or stock up during challenges, such as a round of antibiotics that kills off useful microorganisms along with harmful ones.

The strains of bacteria often found in probiotic supplements and foods like yogurt are lactic acid bacteria that belong to genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterim. The commonly used species include L. acidophilus, L. brevis, L. bulgaricus, L. reuteri, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, L. salivarius, L. casei, B. Bifidum, B. lactis, B. longum, and B. infantis.

Other strains are Escherichia, Enterococus, clostridium, streptococcus, and Saccharomyces (a yeast) families.

Note that all of these bacteria have not been thoroughly researched. Most of the studies have been small, the methodologies imperfect, and the results inconsistent. Preparations and doses are varied. Also, different strains have different health effects, so the findings of one probiotic don necessarily apply to others.

However the probiotic with the most research behind it is Lactobacillus GG, also known as L. rhamnosus GG, (named after its discoverers, Drs. Sherwood Gorbach and Barrin Goldin at Tufts University). This bacteria, has shown good results in treating diarrhea in children and preventing infant allergy. Some products may have several bacterial strains. Such a product called VSL 3 is a mix of four strains of Lactobacilli, three strains of Bifidobacteria, and one strain of Streptococcus salivarius. A probiotic preparation may also contain inulin or fructo oligosaccharides (FOS), plant based components that certain microflora feed on. Such substances are referred to as for some intestinal problems

Probiotic therapy has the best case for treatment of diarrhea. It may also help people with crohn disease and irritable bowel syndrome. These diseases are so frustrating to treat, that many people are giving probiotics a try before all the evidence is in for the particular strains they are using. More research is needed to find out which strains work best for what conditions.

Acute diarrhea. Controlled trials have shown that Lactobacillus GG can shorten the course of infectious diarrhea in infants and children (but not for adults). L. acidophilus and L. Bifidus and Bifictobacerium lactis probiotic in one trial found effective in children or adults. In one study, B. Bifidum and Streptococcus thermophilus when added to infant formula reduced the incidence of diarrhea by 24 %.

Probiotics studies for other gastrointestinal problems are being studied for treating constipation, traveler diarrhea, and H. pylori infection, which causes stomach ulcers and gastric cancers. No strains have been found to be entirely effective in treating irritable bowel syndrome, although the planetarium and B. infantis help relieve individual symptoms of bloating, gas, or diarrhea.

Some people suffer from gas, bloating, and diarrhea if they drink milk because their bodies are short on lactase, an enzyme needed to break down lactose (milk sugar). More that 20 years ago, researchers reported in the New England Journal of Medicine that lactose intolerant individuals had fewer symptoms if they ate yogurt instead of milk. The bacteria in yogurt produce lactase, which digests the lactose before it reaches the large

The vagina has its balanced ecosystem and the dominant Lactobacilli strains normally make it too acidic for harmful microorganisms to survive. However the system can become out of balance by a number of factors, including antibiotics, spermicides, and birth control pills. The vaginal and urinary tracts are also at risk because they are so close to the anus, a source of E. coli and other bacteria that should remain confined to the intestinal tract. The feeling that probiotic treatment that restores the balance of microflora may be helpful for such common female urogenital problems as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, and urinary tract infection.

Many women eat yogurt or insert it into the vagina to treat recurring yeast infections, a remedy for which medical science offers limited support. Oral and vaginal administration of Lactobacilli may help in treatment of bacterial vaginosis, although there isn enough evidence yet to support it over conventional approaches. (Vaginosis must be treated because it creates a risk for pregnancy related complications and pelvic inflammatory diseases.) Probiotic treatment of urinary tract infections is under study.

Rate of Thumb for Taking Probiotics

The recommended doses of probiotics range from 1 billion to 10 billion colony forming units (CFU) the amount contained in a capsule or two several days per week.

Lactobacillus GG, marketed is sold in capsule form. VSL 3 comes in packets of powder that you sprinkle on food. To get the benefits of probiotics in yogurt and other cultured products, make sure the label indicates the presence of or cultures. A daily supplement for one to two weeks is often recommended. Some people take probiotics as a routine prevention measure.

Take note that Probiotic supplement must be handled and stored properly, because they need to be alive when you take them (or when they are freeze dried for capsules). They may die on exposure to heat, moisture, or air. Some require refrigeration.

Are they safe? Probiotics are generally considered safe since they are already present in a normal digestive system. Be sure the ingredients are clearly marked on the label and familiar to you or your health provider. Manufacturers are responsible for making sure sure they are safe before they are marketed and that any claims on a label are effective for the condition you taking them for. Also, health benefits are strain specific and not all strains are necessarily useful. When in doubt, consult a practitioner familiar with probiotics to discuss your options.

09 Earnings Call Transcript,
http://www.eco-liner.it/?p=14678

(Operator Instructions) Welcome to the Abercrombie Fitch Fourth Quarter Earnings Results Conference Call,
http://news.doddleme.com/. At this time I would like to turn the conference over to the Chief Financial Officer Mr. Jonathan Ramsden.

Welcome to our Fourth Quarter Earnings Call. Earlier this morning we released our fourth quarter sales and earnings,
http://www.dynaflow.com/, balance sheet, income statement and an updated financial history. Please feel free to reference these materials which are available on our website.

Before we begin I remind you that any forward looking statements we may make today are subject to the safe harbor statement found in our SEC filings. Today’s earnings call will be limited to one hour. We will begin the call with a few brief remarks from Mike Jeffries,
http://www.julieshoplingerie.com/post-nasal-drip-and-allergies.html, followed by a review of the financial performance for the quarter from Brian Logan and myself. After our prepared comments we will be available to take your questions for as long as time permits. Please limit yourself to one question so that we can speak with any many callers as possible.

We believe the fourth quarter 2008 will go down in history as one of the biggest retail nightmares. It certainly will for me. We saw malls dominated by promotional activity, consumers who continued to show reluctance to spend, especially for premium brands and unprecedented volatility in the economy. In this context,
http://www.tonycrispincarpentry.co.uk/2015/11/how-to-know-what-size-fitted-cap-to-wear/, particularly given our position as an aspirational brand we are satisfied with our results for the quarter.

We reacted to the environment by cutting back on expenses. We used mark downs to clear through seasonal inventory. We reduced capital expenditures by scaling back on our domestic expansion and ended with a strong cash position. Most importantly, we executed our strategy in a way that enabled us to protect our brands.

As a result of these actions, comparable store sales,
http://books.lohudblogs.com/?p=1823, ending inventory levels, and our earnings per share,
http://www.jokesz.com/2015/11/shirt-for-easy-packing/, excluding the effect of one time items, were favorable to the guidance we provided in November. Jonathan and Brian will provide more information on our financial results in a moment.

As we look toward 2009 I want to make a number of points about how we are going to manage our business,
http://blog.shangani.co.uk/.

1) We’re going to protect the brands,
http://www.manoteises.lt/?p=8699.

2) We’re going to preserve cash,
http://gabriel.cetac.se/how-to-fade-t/.

3) We’re going to push international growth,
http://www.hotindienews.com/?p=46909.

All of this in a seasoned disciplined and controlled way,
http://kosmos2012.hu-berlin.de/usuario-discusi/.

First,
http://technitya.com/1960s-fun-lovin-criminals/, we remain committed to protecting our brands, the cornerstone of a successful and profitable business model and therefore vital to long term shareholder value. Our commitment to providing trend right,
http://www.tonycrispincarpentry.co.uk/2015/11/media-musings-blog-archive-reporting-on-qatar-and-the-2022-fifa-world-cup-corruption-scandal/, high quality merchandise has never been stronger than it is today. We will continue to push forward on improved quality even as others remove quality from their product. We constantly obsess about discovering what is next and will continue to improve on our ability to offer a compelling product assortment.

Second, we will preserve cash. We remain committed to managing our operating expenses. We have already undertaken a number of cost saving initiatives and will continue to look for additional opportunities. These efforts are directed toward insuring we are operating in the most efficient and effective manner. We will continue to be mindful of our capital expenditures and manage them for the seasoned and disciplined approach.

Lastly, we continued to be encouraged with the results of our international expansion and are moving forward with our plans to bring our brands to the rest of the world. The Abercrombie Fitch flagship performance continues to be phenomenal. We anxiously await the opening of additional flagships in the second half of 2009 and the Hollister SoHo flagship this summer.

The Hollister UK mall based stores continue to outperform our expectations and we believe we have opportunity to grow that concept this year. We will continue to approach our international expansion with the discipline that the current environment requires and we’ll proceed at a pace with which we feel comfortable. Having said all of this,
http://thebluewatergroup.com.au/2015/11/100-things-to-do-this-summer-in-cleveland/, we will continue to focus on our long term objectives while seeking to maintain flexibility to respond to market conditions as we clearly demonstrated in the fourth quarter.

I want to tell you that during this time of unprecedented turmoil I am completely confident in our approach and our ability to manage and control this business. Our brands are some of the most sought after in all of retail, we have one of the strongest balance sheets in the industry and the passion and energy of the ANF associates is unmatched. With these things in mind we will continue to strengthen our brands and be well positioned in more promising times.

With that I will hand the call back to Jonathan but will be available to answer your questions later,
http://vorticedance.com/?p=9156.

While the current environment is proving to be extremely volatile, as Mike said,
http://www.julieshoplingerie.com/how-to-be-a-good-little-league-baseball-coach.html, we’re satisfied with our ability to manage the business through the past quarter and provide results slightly above estimates provided in November,
http://toppmotet.se/?p=15930, excluding the effect of the impairment and tax charges.

Net sales for the quarter decreased to $998 million, our total comparable stores decline of 25% was slightly better than we had anticipated driven by the combination of stronger post Christmas business,
http://www.mmi-groupe.tn/?p=4407, a trend that has increased in recent years and season ending clearance mark downs. Our gross profit rate in the fourth quarter was 64.4% down 280 basis points from last year as a result of higher mark down rate.

We implemented cost reductions during the quarter which resulted in total operating expenses excluding the asset impairment charge in line with 2007. Excluding the asset impairment and tax charges net income per diluted share was $1,
http://www.sysnatura.com/budget-fixie-bikes-for-sale/.10 and somewhat above the high end of the range we provided in November,
http://colespeace.com/.

As we move forward into 2009 from a financial standpoint we will be focusing on the following; firstly, IMU and gross margin. Secondly,
http://www.dynaflow.com/, continuing with the rigorous review of all of our operating expenses both to achieve absolute expense reductions and to have a more flexible cost base. These efforts will be ongoing in 2009 and beyond. Thirdly, restoring our historical alignment of inventory with sales.

Lastly,
http://skoly.disod.cz/?p=494, as we execute new deals in connection with our international expansion we want to ensure we are getting the best deals we possibly can taking advantage of the strength of our brands,
http://unions-whoswho.eu/post-swimmers-learn-from-top-sport-stars-in-pool.html, very strong initial reaction to our openings in the UK and favorable conditions from a real estate perspective. In other words, our focus is going to be on getting the best possible deals done rather than on maximizing the number of deals. In all of the above we’re going to take a conservative view with market conditions and not rely on a strong economic recovery to restore our operating margin.

Coming on to our specific plans for new store openings in 2009,
http://history.upd.edu.ph/news/heart-rate-during-swimming/, our store growth for the year will be focused on international opportunities. Based on current firm lease commitments we expect total capital expenditures to be in the range of $165 to $175 million including $45 to $50 million for IT, distribution center and home office projects,
http://www.bshearing.com/???/3886/, and $120 to $125 million related to new stores, store refreshes and remodels.

Domestically, in addition to the Hollister flagship in SoHo we have firm commitments to open nine stores in 2009. These commitments include two Abercrombie stores, four Hollister stores, two Gilly Hicks stores, one outlet store. Internationally we have existing firm commitments to open two mall based UK Hollister stores in addition to the three already opened and one Canadian Abercrombie store.

Due to the success of introducing Hollister in the UK we are in active discussions with regard to additional store openings in Europe. Our current best estimate is that we will open approximately 10 additional stores by the end of 2009,
http://www.coolblogtricks.net/. We remain on track to open Abercrombie Fitch and Abercrombie flagships in Milan in November and an Abercrombie Fitch flagship in Tokyo in December. At this point we expect that the A flagship in Copenhagen and the Abercrombie flagship in New York will not open until 2010,
http://blog.shangani.co.uk/.

With regard to operating expenses, as we have previously stated we have implemented a significant number of cost reduction initiatives in both stores and the home office. With regard to MG specifically we are confident that these initiatives will result in expenses below 2008 levels. These expense reduction efforts will be ongoing and will be responsive to the overall sales trend of the business.

We expect that a difficult selling environment will persist throughout 2009 due to the current economic conditions and in particular their impact on sales trends we believe that providing specific EPS guidance at this point would be to borrow a phrase from a fellow retailer, "An exercise in false precision." We will continue to provide monthly sales reports as in the past.

Now to Brian who will provide the more detailed update on our fourth quarter financial performance.

Fiscal 2008 fourth quarter net sales for the 13 weeks ended January 31, 2009,
http://blog.doethicalbusiness.com/?p=32811, decreased 19% to $998 million from $1.23 billion for the 13 weeks ended February 2, 2008. Fourth quarter direct to consumer net sales decreased 12% to $95.1 million. Total company comparable store sales decreased 25%,
http://vorticedance.com/?p=9156, average transaction value per store decreased 25% and average transaction value decreased 1% compared to last year.

About this blog
Four longtime Journal News reporters share their insights about fiction, non-fiction, poetry and short stories by bringing books discussions online and exploring the local literati scene. Lots of people say they are booklovers, but Elizabeth Ganga, Barbara Livingston Nackman, Ken Valenti and Randi Weiner really are!

What they blog about
Book Notes: An ongoing chat about events, authors and news items about books, libraries, authors and everything literary from metro news reporters Barbara Livingston Nackman and Elizabeth Ganga. Barbara has been a reporter for The Journal News since 1997. She covers municipalities in Putnam County and keeps track of book events everywhere - and began her career writing about books and libraries. Lisa has been a reporter for The Journal News since 2000, after working at several newspapers in Connecticut. She has covered cities and town in sourthern and northern Westchester and is a big Jane Austen fan (though she reads everything from history to mysteries). Both reporters work out of the Mount Kisco bureau and frequently trade tidbits about books and events.

Novel Pursuits: Ken Valenti sheds light on his ongoing experiences as a novelist and poet.  He talks about his trials and tribulations including musings about projects, readings, successes, and even insights into what he is reading and finds interesting. A reporter for The Journal News and its forerunners for more than 20 years, Ken now covers transportation. His first love has been writing fiction, but he's only begun pursuing that dream in recent years. He has been a reader and fiction editor for the journal Inkwell, and has published one short story in another fiction journal.

Seasoned Works: Randi Weiner dishes up an ongoing discussion about all books - old and savory. Though Randi keeps readers abreast of school issues most days and reads lots of children's and young adult books, current science fiction and murder mysteries, her overriding passion is older works generally written before 1940. She chats online about favorites and newly discovered treasures as well as book exhibits and talks related to the dusty, the musty and the marvelous illustrators of the past. She has been a reporter since 1976, with Gannett since 1989. And for the record, she says she has a personal library of more than 4,000 volumes.
