Most fuel efficient diesel cars in India

Car manufacturers have realised that they cannot succeed without a diesel variant in their portfolio. This is the reason why Honda went to the drawing board and developed a diesel engine.

Honda didn’t have a single diesel car in its stable. It now plans to introduce diesel variant of its popular vehicles starting with City.

There is a surge in demand for diesel vehicles after petrol prices were de regulated last year. And India is a mileage crazy nation. Good fuel efficiency can make or break the deal.

Here are the 21 diesel cars that offer the best mileage.

Source for car price: Cardekho

Hyundai i20

Mileage: 21.9 kmpl

Price (ex showroom New Delhi): Rs 609,048 Rs 773,218

Hyundai i20 diesel has five variants. The most expensive one, Hyundai i20 Asta 1.4 CRDi, gives a mileage of 21.27 kmpl. All others are slightly more fuel efficient.

Buyers prefer the car as it is spacious, stylish, and has a good seating position. Recently, Tata Motors introduced a face lifted version of the hatch with huge improvements and added features such as ABS and steering mounted controls.

Tata didn just introduce cosmetic changes but added more powerful engine, bigger and better interiors, and improved quality overall.

Vista comes with six variants in the diesel category. Four with Quadrajet engines and two with TDI. The petrol variant starts at Rs 582,300 and it competes across categories with compact sedans such as Maruti Dzire and Honda Amaza, as well as compact SUVs such as Renault Duster and Mahindra XUV.

The car is elegant and comes loaded. Ford has also included good amount of safety features in it. The Ecoboost engine probably is the best in its category that gives a good balance of power and mileage.

The car looks sporty, aggressive and with character. It is an apt small car for youth and aspiring Indian customers looking for a bold, fuel efficient compact vehicle that is fun to drive in the city as well as on the highways.

Syria: Battle for Daria rages as Syrian Army pushes forward1:25

Syrian Army troops were seen fighting against militants in Daria, Saturday, as government forces continued to push forward against the Islamic State and other militant groups near Damascus. The Syrian Army reported retaking more than 40 blocks from militants in Daria in the latest assault. According to General Ali Abdullah Ayyoub, the head of the Syrian General Staff, the Syrian Army’s advance has been made possible due to Russian Air Force jets managing to destroy various important targets controlled by militant groups in the area. Russia began conducting airstrikes against IS positions in Syria on September 30. Earlier on Saturday, Russian Defense Ministry spokesperson Major General Igor Konashenkov confirmed that the Russian Air Force had stepped up its air campaign against ISIS. According to French government sources, Cairo will pay around $1 billion (?950 million) for the vessels, using financing from Saudi Arabia. The French Defense Ministry announced last month that the Mistrals would be delivered to Egypt around March 2016. The contract also provides four months of training in France for around 400 Egyptian sailors. Russia ordered the construction of the two ‘Mistral’ class helicopter carriers from France back in 2011. The ships were meant to be delivered in 2014, but the process was delayed as a result of the European Union imposed sanctions against Russia. Moscow was paid ?950 million ($1 billion) by Paris in compensation money. Footage courtesy of Egypt State TelevisionCam Inman: Jarryd Hayne handled release ‘really well’1:17

Violent clashes continued in Bethlehem as Palestinian protesters battled with Israeli security forces, on Saturday. Dozens of Palestinians were injured during the clashes, among many erupting across the Occupied Palestinian Territories as protests have escalated in the West Bank and Gaza due to rising political tensions over the Al Aqsa mosque, as well as the continued construction of illegal Israeli settlements. At least 42 Palestinians and seven Israelis have died in the latest round of violence.

What should I buy my employees

I own a small business (around 15 people in the office at any given time). Some days, I’m feeling grumpy, most days, I’m feeling normal, and some days, I’m feeling generous.

Where we are as a company, I can’t raise people’s salaries when I’m feeling generous. I would, though, like to be able to bring in some gift of appreciation on occasion. When certain sales goals are met, the whole office gets lunch, and I’d like to keep the lunch reward tied to sales goals.

I assume a number of you work in some sort of office yourself. I want to limit this in time (no seven page individualized essays on why each person is a shining example of humanity) and money (this will likely come out of my pocket, and I’m not, by any means, wealthy).

Under $10 a person would make sense. I’m in a large metropolitan area, so I have access to a number of different types of shops.

What food/trinkets/stuff could someone at work get you that would brighten your day/make you feel happy without distracting you too much (squirt guns are probably out)?

Why not give them each a free pass for a half day off. They can leave early, come in late, whatever. I’d like that more than a bagel or a mousepad.

Cinema gift cards are always appreciated.

Company T shirts? I don’t get the attraction myself but people at my work go crazy over free shirts.

You could also do movie ticket vouchers or some similar event (cheap minor league sports tickets?).

A 3 hour lunch would be nice. Coffee. I’d stay away from trinket ey sorts of things like, I don’t know, fun erasers or something. We work in a time sensitive business, and while we’re doing well right now, we’re not doing that well. Plus, at least for our sales time, time off just means less time to close deals. We have a half day Friday incentive that, when earned, is usually mostly ignored by the staff, because commission is worth more than their hourly wage.

posted by duckierose at 10:12 AM on February 18, 2010

Cinema gift cards are certainly not always appreciated. Maybe by you. In general gift cards are a bad choice, because it forces people to go somewhere to redeem it that they might not want to go.

Nice coffee and tea for the office is good, or a better coffee maker. It’s something the entire office can enjoy, normally. I think token gifts in lieu of raises or bonsues is pretty tacky, and I don’t really appreciate it much. Call me ungrateful, but I do my job well because I take pride in my work, and don’t want to feel "bribed" by my employer to continue doing a good job. not having to use vacation time, are without doubt the best gift I’ve ever received from my boss.

posted by halogen at 10:15 AM on February 18, 2010

I’m liking the suggestions, but please remember, this is going to be out of my own pocket. I am not the sole owner of the company, and while I wish I could shower ever staff member with raises and vacation time, it’s not economically feasible at this time. I don’t wish to give out a $5 coffee mug in lieu of a raise. I was just hoping for fun ideas to make people smile for a bit on a slow Friday afternoon, coming from a person, not The Company.

posted by duckierose at 10:20 AM on February 18, 2010

Extra time off, gift cards or a free lunch are a good bet.

posted by cwarmy at 10:23 AM on February 18, 2010

I think shownomercy has a good suggestion. At our office people regularly supply good tea and coffee (having both caf and decaf available), and we have a decent coffee maker, microwave, and a hot water pot/kettle. You as boss bumping up the offerings in that line to better quality sometimes would be very much appreciated around my office.

How To Calculate Turnover Ratio in Basketball

The turnover ratio in basketball is a statistic that measures which player on the team is most likely to turn the ball over. For enthusiasts and fans, knowing the turnover ratio for specific players can be a valuable piece of trivia. For coaches and other professionals involved in basketball, it can be used as an assessment point for improving the team’s performance. Here’s how you can solve for the turnover ratio in basketball.

Narrow down the player. Begin by narrowing down the number of players whose turnover ratio you want to compute for. It will be almost impossible to get the turnover ratio for all players, which means that you have to focus on just a few. Make sure, however, that you have at least two players in mind, so that you will be able to make comparisons. At the same time, you also need to determine the time frame for the sample that you are going to take of the ratio. You can have a single game as the time frame, or a season. You can even make a turnover ratio analysis of a player’s career, which will give more accurate results since you are covering the entire career span of the athlete.

Find the stats. Next, you will need to have several data at the ready. These include the field goals attempted, the field goals made, the free throws made, the assists, and the turnovers. Keep in mind that these data should come from the time frame that you have chosen. In other words, if you are going to analyze a player within a specific season, all of the data should come only form that season. If you are going to analyze the career of a player, then you should include all of the games that the athlete has played professionally.

Multiply. Next, take the number of attempted free throws and then multiply this value with the number 0.44. Combine this with the total field goal that has been attempted.

Possession total. The number you have just derived will then be used to compute for the possession total, which can be determined by adding the number from the previous step to the total turnovers and assists that the player has made within the time frame in question.

Multiply. Once this is done, you will need to multiply by one hundred the total turnovers. The resulting figure should then be divided by the sum of all possessions that has been made by the particular player. This will constitute your turnover ratio for the player that you are analyzing. As a rule, the number is usually rounded out to the tenth of the nearest percentage.

You can follow the same procedure for other players so that you can create comparisons between one team and another. Keep in mind, however, that the comparisons should also be based on the same time frame. This means that if you analyzed a given player’s turnover ratio for a season, it should also be compared to player whose turnover ratio is a season in length.

2. House to vote on budget deal

The House is expected to vote Wednesday on a bipartisan, two year budget deal supported by the White House. The deal, which was reached this week, would suspend the debt ceiling until March 2017; that pushesany argumentover the debt limit beyond the 2016 election cycle and placesit into the hands of a new presidential administration and a new Congress. The deal also creates a two year budget plan that would bring some relief from across the board spending cuts and would createa path to avoida government shutdown in December.

3. Former House speakerto plead guilty

Former House speaker Dennis Hastert who is accused of lying to the FBI about making structured bank transactions to pay hush money to someone he wronged years ago is expected to plead guilty to the charges Wednesday. Hastert served 20 years in Congress and was indicted in May. While the plea agreement could mean that Hastert could spend time in prison, it could also mean that the 73 year old can keep embarrassing details about his past out of the public eye.

4. All ears tuned to the Fed for interest rate clues

Economists say there is virtually no chance the Federal Reserve will announce an interest rate hike when its two day meeting concludes Wednesday. But just what will itsay? The policymaking committeeheld off on a rate increase last month, citing global economic troubles. However,13 of 17 committeemembers still projected the central bank would raise its benchmark rate this year. Since then, job growth and some measures of consumer spending have slumped. The big drama now seems to be whether the Fed will indicate that a rate hike is still possible this year, or whether it will wait until 2016 to act.

Threat Position in Basketball

Basketball is a great way to break a sweat. Playing basketball allows you to move all your body parts. It can help you lose weight too. There are many positions and techniques in basketball that you can learn in order to master the game. Whether it be amateur or professional basketball, these positions and techniques are very important to ensure a winning game and the improvement of the player. One of the positions crucial to the game is the triple threat position. This position is called such because when you have the ball, you can pass, shoot or dribble the ball. When you are in a triple threat position, you have all the advantage and have the chance to score or let your teammate shoot the ball by passing it to him. If you want to use this position next time you play basketball, this article will show you how. Read on.

Position yourself near the basket. While the ball is still in your teammate’s possession, get as near to the basket as possible so your teammate can pass the ball to you. But do not get too near that you enter the perimeter area and stay there for more than a few second because you will be called for a three second violation.

Ask the ball from your teammate. Let the one holding the ball look at you and signal to him to pass the ball to you. If he sees that you are in a good position, he will immediately give you the possession of the ball.

Do a triple threat position. Once you get the ball, scan the court for the best spot near the basket for this position. You must position yourself in such a way that you see your teammates where you can pass the ball, the basket where you can take a shot and an escape area where you can dribble the ball to get out of the opponent’s defense line.

Decide whether to shoot, dribble or pass. When you are in position, evaluate the situation in the court. If your opponent is in a position where you can do either of the three, determine which move to make. If one of your teammates is nearer to the basket and has more potential to shoot the ball, then you can pass it to him. When there is no one else in the low post for you to pass the ball, you can make the shot, provided your opponent will not get in the way. Lastly, if the opponent is threatening to grab the ball from you, dribble it and get away from your post and find a better spot to make a shot.

When playing basketball, it is important to warm up before the game to prep your muscles and your whole body for the grueling activity ahead and to prevent any sprains and muscle pulls. Use appropriate shoes to avoid having blisters. On the other hand, for you to be a pro in basketball, keep practicing the different moves and techniques during your free time. You will be amazed to discover that these moves and techniques are pretty easy to do. So what are you waiting for? Take out those basketball shoes and jerseys and get to a basketball and bust those moves!

Media Musings Blog Archive Steve Jobs

Yesterday, founder and former CEO of Apple Steve Jobs died. Though he had been battling cancer for many years, his death was a shock. Only two months ago he still headed the world’s coolest technology company.

Jobs survived the 1990s tech bubble. He and Apple came through a near bankruptcy and rebuilt to become one of the world’s wealthiest and most recognizable brands. For this, and for making technology user friendly, he deserves our respect.

The tributes quickly turned from the man to the company. It’s understandable. Jobs lived for Apple: he was its driving force, its vision. Even Julia Gillard said he was a man who changed our world But it is here that the tributes become nauseating.

So why was the media so keen to emphasis the good points about Steve Jobs, to the extent of glorifying a company which has been accused of abusing workers rights and of anti competitive behaviour?

One, Steve Jobs just died. It difficult to write badly of the dead, even if they have flaws. And Jobs, more than most CEOs, embodied his company. It extremely difficult to write of Jobs separate from his company.

Secondly, journalists tend to love Apple. Journalists aren programmers or tech experts, but they rely on computers. Apple user friendly design may have blinded them to some the company flaws. Also, while the vast majority of journalists have an iPad, the vast majority of the population does not. The disconnect can lead journalists to over emphasis Apple significance. Many of Apple signature products were not new when they were released, but under Jobs guidance the company found ways to repackage and sell old technology. But this diminishes his significance. marketer with its overtones of trickery, wouldn sell as many papers as changed our world is a pity. In misdirecting our praise, we gloss over the true achievements of an extremely creative man.

California lawmaker calls for better protection of student athletes

April 5, 2013 By Patrick McGreevy

The gruesome leg injury to University of Louisville basketball player Kevin Ware has one California lawmaker calling for better financial protections for student athletes nationwide. In a letter to the National Collegiate Athletic Assn., state Sen. Alex Padilla (D Pacoima) said the group should at least adopt standards in a new California law. The measure, which took effect Jan. 1, requires universities that make a certain amount of money from television deals to provide the equivalent of academic scholarships to athletes whose injuries result in them losing their athletic scholarships.

ARTICLES BY DATELoyola Marymount student athletes are making the grade

April 26, 2014 By James Barragan

The NCAA and its member institutions often refer to "student athletes," but the front side of the term isn’t often highlighted in a sports section. We asked officials from the Southland’s Division I universities to point us toward their best and brightest the teams that made classroom performance a priority. Here is what we found at Loyola Marymount: The Seaver School of Science and Engineering at Loyola Marymount is not for the faint of academic heart. But it’s where a fair share of Loyola Marymount athletes 27 of 395 to be exact focus their studies.

One city weighs action on student athletes with possible concussions

January 13, 2011 By Mary Forgione, Tribune Health

Concussions among student athletes are on the rise, as are concerns that repeated injuries could have serious long term effects. But less clear are the steps schools and communities should take in protecting children who play sports from such injuries. Chicago, for example, is weighing a new rule. Executive Director DeMaurice Smith has spoken out in support of the ruling allowing Northwestern football players to unionize, saying it has nothing to do with college athletes looking for a paycheck. "In the more than 100 years since the NCAA was founded, it has not allowed athletes to have a seat at the table to discuss serious issues and therefore has done little to address full medical coverage for injuries sustained, limitations on practice time, scholarship shortfalls and rules to make promised education a reality," Smith wrote in an op ed piece published Tuesday night by The Huffington Post.

If student athletes are employees, give them a seat at the negotiating table

March 27, 2014 By Matthew Fleischer, guest blogger

Yet another nail went into the coffin of the NCAA on Wednesday. And for those who genuinely care about the well being of college athletes, that couldn’t be better news. Peter Sung Ohr, a regional National Labor Relations Board official, ruled that scholarship football players at Northwestern University aren’t student athletes, as the NCAA likes to designate them, but rather employees of the school who generate vast sums of money for the institution. We asked officials from the Southland’s Division I universities to point us toward their best and brightest the teams that made classroom performance a priority. Here is what we found at Loyola Marymount: The Seaver School of Science and Engineering at Loyola Marymount is not for the faint of academic heart. 31). Athletes are offered free rides to institutions they admit they otherwise could not have attended based on their grades, and then they complain about the requirements. About this blog
Four longtime Journal News reporters share their insights about fiction, non-fiction, poetry and short stories by bringing books discussions online and exploring the local literati scene. Lots of people say they are booklovers, but Elizabeth Ganga, Barbara Livingston Nackman, Ken Valenti and Randi Weiner really are!

What they blog about
Book Notes: An ongoing chat about events, authors and news items about books, libraries, authors and everything literary from metro news reporters Barbara Livingston Nackman and Elizabeth Ganga. Barbara has been a reporter for The Journal News since 1997. She covers municipalities in Putnam County and keeps track of book events everywhere - and began her career writing about books and libraries. Lisa has been a reporter for The Journal News since 2000, after working at several newspapers in Connecticut. She has covered cities and town in sourthern and northern Westchester and is a big Jane Austen fan (though she reads everything from history to mysteries). Both reporters work out of the Mount Kisco bureau and frequently trade tidbits about books and events.

Novel Pursuits: Ken Valenti sheds light on his ongoing experiences as a novelist and poet.  He talks about his trials and tribulations including musings about projects, readings, successes, and even insights into what he is reading and finds interesting. A reporter for The Journal News and its forerunners for more than 20 years, Ken now covers transportation. His first love has been writing fiction, but he's only begun pursuing that dream in recent years. He has been a reader and fiction editor for the journal Inkwell, and has published one short story in another fiction journal.

Seasoned Works: Randi Weiner dishes up an ongoing discussion about all books - old and savory. Though Randi keeps readers abreast of school issues most days and reads lots of children's and young adult books, current science fiction and murder mysteries, her overriding passion is older works generally written before 1940.
